Why is profit a bad word these days?

I’m sick to death of all of the media and politicians criticising businesses that made significant profits.

Do they not realise that it is these organisations that will drive the country out of recession?

Do they not realise that without profits, investments in new projects/ jobs etc will simply not happen?

More interestingly, do they not realise that it is the Profits on which Companies are taxed and not Revenue – so enough of the moaning about the amount of profits, let’s encourage our businesses to be the most successful that they can be, let’s celebrate success as opposed to decrying it.

I’m encouraged by the stance taken by Jeremy Warner in the Telegraph – please please will all journalist/ politicians start beating the success drum.

Do you need more energy??

Wow what a day!

And another action packed day tomorrow!

How many times have you said that to yourself – I certainly have many times. Which got me thinking…

How can I ensure that I have an abundance of energy. I did some research and here are my seven steps to energy nirvana – OK a little OTT perhaps, especially as there’s only 6!

Here are the basic items that we must pay attention to insure optimal energy levels:

1. Get More Sleep – Today, the average person gets only 6 hours of sleep per night. that is simply not enough. I recommend 7-8 hours per night so that our bodies can rejuvenate, restore, and re-build. If stress is high and sleep is suffering, the hormone cortisol will run rampant and we will be robbed of the energy we so desperately desire. Commit to going to sleep before 11 pm and set the alarm for a time that allows you to wake up and do the next basic item: exercise.

2. Get Exercising – Regardless of how “busy” you are, you must exercise. Getting started is often the most difficult part but it needs to be part of your daily routine. Find a friend, work out in the morning, hire a trainer, get some good music, buy some workout videos, set motivating goals, and commit to your health. I encourage you to progress to where you are exercising 4-6 times per week for 45 minutes. You will feel so good and it will be the foundation that will fuel your entire life. This is a MUST!

3. Don’t Ignore Nutrition – We need to focus on eating more “natural” foods from the earth. Too much of our food is processed and manufactured and this does not provide us with the energy we need. Food is fuel and we must put high octane fuel in our tanks to maximize our performance. Simple measures you can take include reducing caffeine, eating a large breakfast, and making your meals get smaller throughout the day.

4. Drink More Water – You should consume ½ your bodyweight in fluid ounces of pure water per day. If you drink coffee, tea, or alcohol, you need to increase this amount. If you are physically active, you need to increase this amount. Bottom line–drink more water!

5. Take a Break – whether it be 10 minutes during the day, an off hour for lunch, one day off per week, or permitting yourself to take a vacation, allow yourself the chance to catch your breath, take a break, and refuel your passion.

6 Get Your Mindset In Gear – It is not easy to always have a positive mindset. It is critical though to have your positive energy more powerful than anyone else’s negative energy. Like negative energy, positive energy is contagious and spreads like wildfire. If you can put a smile on a strangers face, make a difference in a kid’s life, inspire a colleague or co-worker, or just make someone feel better, than you have made the world a better place to live.

The principle of growth…. The principle of life…

The principle of growth… The principle of life…

Life is a matter of challenge, when you want to grow in any aspect of your life you have to consider challenges.

Ask yourself and answer it very honestly, is there any growth in your life?

Or are you having the true growth in your life that you desire?

Take an audit of your life. Are the changes in your life providing you an advancement to your career or your business? Get the passion back to your life.

Here are some Famous Quotes that successful businessmen lived by along with my comment.

“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” –Henry David Thoreau

Or I’d rather say, success comes to those who deserve it. Love is like love, it doesn’t matter how much you have in the beginning but how much you can gain until the end. Thus, love your job and work hard for it, you’ll surely benefit to it in return.

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” –Thomas A. Edison

Once you started to join any venture, never give up too easily. It is a fact that most of the time, people tend to walk away and not realizing they’re very close to succeeding they desires in life. Stand to what you believe is right and fight for it.

“Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities. They vary in their desires to reach their potential.” –John Maxwell

A successful person believes in his abilities that he can do anything positively, but the unsuccessful person believes that he can be successful yet fail to have faith in his own abilities. So choose whether you want to be successful or not.

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” –Winston Churchill

Failure is the greatest challenge to anyone. It makes us stronger and wiser. Thus, success can never be success without the pain we had from failures and wrong decisions. However, we should always be optimistic that everything is possible and believe that there’s no so-called “LUCKY” success is a matter of hardworking, guts and faith in one’s self.

Motivate yourself: What is success to you?

“The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way

“The only difference between a rich person and poor person is how they use their time

“Your future is created by what you do today not tomorrow

“The primary reason people seek job security is because that is what they are taught to seek at home, and at school… then with debt loads, they must cling even tighter to a job, or professional security, just to pay the bills.

Research is the key!

In a recent interview for Business XL magazine, Peter Jones (of Dragons Den fame) states that many small business owners fall short when it comes to appreciating the importance of research.

He states, quite rightly that small business owners need to have undertaken the right research before they launch their business, and should continue to undertake regular research throughout their growth period.

This raises an interesting question – what should your research cover?

I believe that your research should focus on two key areas;

1. what your competition/ the market is doing

2. how your product/ services is seen within the market

The outcome of this research will enable you to continue develop and improve your business by maintaining the focus on what the market demands. This will ensure that your customers remain loyal and recommend others to you.

How do you go about undertaking research?

There are many ways to conduct research. The internet is full of market information that can help you to understand the dynamics of your specific area of interest. You could undertake a customer survey – there are many web based tools such as Survey Monkey that can help you develop an effective programme. You could mystery shop your competition or indeed your own business to see how you perform from ‘the customers perspective’

I’d recommend that you involve your team and look to delegate responsibility for each area of research to an individual – they will take ownership and feel a key part of your ongoing development.
